berangere Yashima Kunio, président du Comité de Préservation des Propriétés Culturelles de l'Association des Archéologues du Japon, est venu visiter le site de Nakagusuku Udun, situé dans l'enceinte du lycée de Shuri à Naha. Le site a été fouillé sous le terrain de sport du lycée car la ville de Naha désire construire un nouveau lycée à l'emplacement du terrain de sports, et déplacer le terrain de sport à l'endroit du lycée actuel.
La campagne de fouilles a duré deux ans, j'y ai pris part pendant trois mois, en charge d'un secteur dans le nord du site. Nous savions d'après les sources historiques que Nakagusuku Udun, la résidence des dauphins du Royaume de Ryūkyū avait un jour existé à cet emplacement*, la surprise a essentiellement résidé dans l'excellent état de conservation. Du coup l'Association des Archéologues d'Okinawa pèse de tout son poids pour obtenir un arrêt des travaux prévus.
Yashima Kunio est venu lui aussi dans ce but. Après sa visite du site, il a eu une réunion avec le Comité d'Éducation de la Préfecture d'Okinawa et a rédigé une lettre officielle pour demander la préservation de Nakagusuku Udun, envoyée à la préfecture et à la ville de Naha.
Le Comité d' Éducation a déjà annoncé que le projet avait été modifié et que la résidence allait être ré-enterrée, et le nouveau lycée construit au-dessus sans aucun impact sur le sous-sol.
Cependant, situé si près du château de Shuri, le site de Nakagusuku Udun devrait pouvoir recevoir l'opportunité d'être inclus dans le parc construit autour du centre historique du Royaume de Ryūkyū. Il semble qu'il existe un précédent dans la préfecture d'Ōita où une école a été déplacée pour préserver un site archéologique.
* il existe deux Nakagusuku Udun: d'abord construit à l'est du château de Shuri (emplacement dont cet article parle), il a été déplacé au XIXè siècle au nord. Le Nakagusuku Udun du nord a lui aussi été fouillé, il était sous l'ancien musée préfectoral qui a été déplacé en centre ville. Un projet de reconstruction et d'inclusion de ce Nakagusuku Udun dans le Parc Historique de Shuri est en cours de réalisation.

The site was excavated below the sports ground because Naha City planned to rebuilt the aging Shuri High School on the sports ground and set a new sports ground at the location of the current school.
The excavation campaign lasted for two years and I participated for about three months, in charge of an area on the northern side of the site. We knew from historical sources that Nakagusuku Udun, residence of the crown princes of the Ryūkyū Kingdom used to be here*, but everybody was surprised at the excellent state of conservation. So that Okinawa Archaeologists Association tries really hard to stop the construction works.
Yashima Kunio came in this purpose. After his visit of the site, he went and concert with Okinawa Prefecture Board of Education and wrote an official request letter for the preservation of Nakagusuku Udun, to be sent to the prefecture and Naha City.
The Board of Education already announced that the project had been modified and that the residence would be buried and the new school built atop without any harm to the ruins.
However, located so close to Shuri Castle, Nakagusuku Udun should be given the opportunity to become a part of the Historical Park built around the centre of the Ryūkyū Kingdom. There seems to be a precedent in Ōita Prefecture where a school has been relocated to preserve an historical site.
* there are two Nakagusuku Udun: first built on the eastern side of Shuri Castle (location dealt with in this article), he was moved on the 19th century to the northern side of the castle. The northern Nakagusuku Udun was surveyed too: it was below the former Prefectural Museum that has been relocated downtown. A reconstruction project to include this Nakagusuku Udun into Shuri Castle Historical Park is in progress.
